startpageGoogle has been my default start page for decades, but I’ve abandoned it as of today. My Chrome browser now opens to StartPage, but still returns search-results from Google… less all those AdSense results at the top of the list.

StartPage is a free UK service that acts as a middleman between your web-searches, and the results that Google returns. This additional insulation prevents targeted ads from appearing in the web pages you subsequently view, for example. It also prevents Google from adding to the profile they currently maintain on you.

The StartPage search-results have a small but noticeable delay loading due to the additional processing involved, but it’s less than a second. An easy to accommodate trade-off, considering that I likely spend as much time scanning down to the first non-paid results that Google provides.

Take a look at the StartPage website for more details and a test-drive.
